Whilst CPN have concentrated on working for over 20 years with operations overseas due to the movement
of the textile industry, they have realised that their services are required much closer to home. This gives
businesses like Screenworks a fantastic opportunity to increase their growth efficiently and profitably.

Clean Burn Dryer System.
Jointly Sanco Technology Ltd (Dryer engineers based in Nottinghamshire) and CPN Ltd (Textile screen print
consultants based in Yorkshire) are launching a new range of curing systems.
This revolutionary system called Clean Burn is what the printing industry has been waiting for since the
Egyptians and Greeks used stenciling in 2500BC.
The design and importance of the dryer has always been secondary in the printing operation by the
manufacturer and customer. The dryer has a stigma that it is just a metal box that burns money, most customers
buy drying systems on price. But don’t know what the dryer is costing them to run or understand the damage
the dryer is doing to their staff, the environment and their own product. The majority of dryer manufacturers
are really print machine manufacturers as they just want to be a one stop shop for equipment. There has been
no technical advancement to significantly reduce a customer’s carbon footprint. Many manufacturers use off
the shelf components for gas and electric heating systems instead of designing specifically to create a carbon
reducing dryer. Unlike the NASA technology that Sanco have used in their burners, this is combined with Hi tech
fan technology within the Clean Burn dryer system. John Jackson of CPN Ltd has stated that the dryer is the
most important piece of equipment in a print shop. With the right dryer a printshop eliminates many of its quality
and technical issues i.e.
• Curing the ink (New ink systems - Formaldehyde free, PVC Free, Phthalate free).
• Washability - meeting criteria of the customers wash standard.
• Fabric discolouration and scorching, especially on white fabric.
• Control of temperature throughout the oven.
• Slow belt speed - increase of prints cured/hour.
• Heat loss - inadequate insulation in the dryer.
• Pollution into the factory and into the atmosphere.
• Gases burnt only partially, remaining is extracted into the atmosphere.
• Contamination - If ink is not cured correctly.
Sanco Technology (formerly Calmat/SC Technical )and CPN have come together to form a partnership on
the experience that both businesses have gained globally within the printing industry i.e. China, India, Thailand,
Sri Lanka, Madagascar, Australia, Turkey, USA and Europe.
This partnership has been formed over many years of supplying dryers worldwide and understanding the
problems operations faced with gas, electricity, fabrics, climate temperatures and ink systems.
Carbon trust.

Energy -Efficient Loans.
The Carbon trust is an independent, not for profit company set up by the
government in 2001 to accelerate the Uk’s move to a low carbon economy.
Its Carbon Trust solutions service delivers practical solutions to the corporate
challenges of climate change, working with business and the public sector
to identify carbon emissions and ways of cutting them. But at the same time
encourages investment in energy efficiency to reduce CO2 emissions. One way
of achieving this is by making available so-called interest free Energy-Efficiency Loans of between £3,000 and £400,000 to help SMEs invest in energysaving equipment.

• Interest free loans help businesses to overcome cost barriers associated with the purchase of capital
equipment.
• The projected energy savings will be independently assessed by an energy consultant appointed by
the Carbon Trust. In the majority of cases the energy saved will cover the monthly loan repayment, so your
equipment will pay for itself.
• The interest free loans application is very easy to fill in and only takes 15 minutes, both Sanco and CPN will
provide assistance towards submitting the application.
• The carbon trust will reply to all applications within 2 weeks of registering and submitting the application for
an interest free loan.
Existing equipment that doesn’t have the clean burn technology can be modified by the Sanco team of
engineers to reduce the dryers CO2. Whilst the emission reduction, energy savings and air flow are not as great
as with the full clean burn dryer they are still very significant.
Importantly the dryers are manufactured wholly in the UK, which means servicing and technical back up is on
hand. The Clean Burn dryer has been designed in such a way that it can be installed within one working day and
requires very low maintenance. Technical assistance can be given without call outs via a Programmable Logic
Controller (PLC).
Duncan Gilmour the production manager of Screenworks based in Haverhill- Suffolk is purchasing a new Clean
Burn dryer system. He has applied for an interest free loan towards the full dryer cost, this also covers the cost
of decommissioning the old dryer, pipework, ducting and installation. Duncan justifys the purchase of the dryer
because of the reduction in emissions, financial savings through lower gas and electricity usage. But in addition
the increased speed the dryer provides will enable him to enhance his productivity without having to go onto
2 shifts. It is estimated that his annual CO2 saving will be almost 12 tonne of CO2, 24 tonne if you take into
consideration keeping to 1 shift. This does not take into consideration further savings labour, lighting, heating
etc. by not running an extra shift.
The Clean Burn system has given Screenworks the opportunity to take a step back and to re-think their business
strategy. Duncan has obtained the services of CPN to look at the business from an outsider’s point of view,
as he is pursuing continuous growth over the next five years. The consultancy CPN have provided has been
in the form of re-structuring the business in the existing building through an improved layout and new working
practices.
